TheSt. Ninian Chape brooch design is derived from the Pictish treasure found on St. Ninian, Shetland: a beautiful hoard of silver bowls, pins, brooches and chapes. The chapes date from the late 8th century and the ornately engraved one has remarkably similar parallel in a clay mould found on the Brough of Birsay in Orkney. The two porpoise-like heads had significance in Pictish folklore, perhaps as two se gods, or possibly as a representation of the good and evil side of Man's character.
